Gran Canaria Todo el año a 20 grados

General information

The combined efforts of the Ministry of Sports of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and the Council of the same area of the Ayuntamiento de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, over the course of weeks of meetings with a common goal, have begun to bear fruit and the capital city of Gran Canaria has been added to the international calendar of the big sporting events.

In 2010, this city will join the ranks of all those capital cities which play host to marathons, at different times of the year, and attract the attention of the sport's most important athletes.

When all across Europe the climate becomes more hostile, here in the Gran Canaria we take advantage of the mildness of our temperatures to offer athletes the chance to add to their calendars a new sporting event that will put the island in the international athletics spotlight.

In particular, our efforts have been focused on designing a perfect course which contributes to creating a symbiosis between sport and the promotion of tourism, to the benefit of all involved.

Madrid, Barcelona, Saragossa, San Sebastián, Palma de Mallorca and Valencia are some of the Spanish cities which are already familiar with the “magnet effect” that hosting a sporting event of this magnitude in their streets brings out, and soon the marathon of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will become another not-to-be-missed date for the world's top long-distance runners.

The members of both the Cabildo and the Ayuntamiento of the capital are immersed in our very own marathon: to achieve our objective by 2010, so that the bang signalling the start of the 42,195 metres through the city also becomes the moment in which Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is placed firmly on the map of international athletics.
